From Milwaukee, he enlisted in Company F, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 10 May 1861. Promoted to Corporal. Offered but declined commission as 2nd Lieutenant on 6 August 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
His left arm was amputated, and he was discharged 12 January 1863 for wounds.
