In 1860 he was 19 years old, and living with a boatman's family at Royalton, Berrien County, MI, and he enlisted in Company G, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 11 June 1861. He was detached to Battery B, 4th United States Artillery, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action while serving with Battery B at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
