He enlisted in Company D, 23rd New York Infantry on 6 May 1861 at age 21.

On the Campaign

He was detached for service with Battery B, 4th US Artillery and was with them when he was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He mustered out with his Company on 22 May 1863 in Elmira, NY.
