A 22 year old farmer, he enlisted in Detroit, MI on 22 March 1858 as a Private in Battery B, 4th United States Artillery. At the US Census of 1860 he was with the Battery in Ruby Valley, Nevada.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He mustered out at the end of his enlistment at Belle Plain, VA on 22 March 1863, still a Private.
