Before Antietam

A 28 year old tinsmith, he enlisted on 16 January 1857 in New York City as a Private in Battery B of the 4th United States Artillery. In July 1860 he was with the Battery in Ruby Valley, UT. He was still a Private in the Battery as it joined the Army of the Potomac in October 1861 and he probably reenlisted in January 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
