From Plainfield, he enlisted in Company I, 7th Wisconsin Infantry on 2 August 1861.
On the Campaign
He was detached to Battery B, 4th US Artillery on 13 September 1862, and was later cited for bravery at Antietam by Lt Stewart in his Report.
