Before Antietam

A 23 (or 25) year old farmer, he enlisted in Lodi, WI and mustered in Madison as a Private in Company A, 7th Wisconsin Infantry on 27 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 and was buried "on the Blue Ridge, 1/2 mile from the tavern - probably the South Mountain Inn - facing Middletown, MD, near Bolivar."

The rest of the War

His mother Margaret applied for a US pension in December 1867 based on Michael's service, saying she had relied on him for her support; his father had died in Ireland in October 1841. Her application was approved.
