Unit history

Originally organized as the Peninsula Artillery, this company was formed under the command of Captain Joseph B. Cosnahan in York County on May 18, 1861. Originally designated as Company I, 32nd Virginia Infantry, the company, upon reorganization was assigned as Company G of the 1st Regiment Virginia Artillery. Captain William B. Jones later succeeded Cosnahan as battery commander.

On the Sharpsburg Campaign

Under command of General D. H. Hill, the battery was deployed in support of his position behind the sunken lane.

After the Sharpsburg Campaign

Under ANV Special Orders Number 209 dated October 4, 1862, the battery was disbanded and its material and men ditributed to other units. This was because the unit was 'inefficient' - understrength in men and horses.
