Unit history

Organized at various points in Maryland, by May 1862 the 3rd Regiment, Potomac Home Brigade, a three-year militia unit, was assigned to the Federal Mountain Department seeing action at Franklin and Wardensville, Virginia, and at Moorefield in June. They were then transferred to the Middle Department, serving along the upper Potomac in Maryland.

On the Antietam Campaign

On September 13, 1862, they were ordered to the garrison at Harpers Ferry, and were engaged on the Maryland and Bolivar Heights. They surrendered with the rest of the garrison on 15 September.

After the Antietam Campaign

After being exchanged they guarded the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. In July 1864, during Early's raid, they were engaged near Frederick (7-8 July) and at the battle of Monocacy (9 July). The 3rd was then with Hunter in the engagement at Snicker's Gap, Va. on the 18th. They were under Sheridan in the Valley and saw action at Bolivar Heights, Halltown, Charlestown and Berryville (August 1864), then transferred to West Virginia for the duration of the War.
