Before Antietam
He attended the US Military Academy (USMA) at West Point from 1844-48, but resigned before graduation and became a gold prospector and later a lawyer. In May 1861 he was appointed brigade inspector of Ohio state volunteers, and served in Western Virginia. In August 1861 he was appointed Colonel of the 30th Ohio Infantry.
On the Campaign
He commanded the regiment in Maryland and assumed command of the brigade when Colonel Scammon took over the Division.
The rest of the War
He also led his Regiment on the Vicksburg campaign, and in November 1862 was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers. He then commanded the 4th Division/15th Corps at Chattanooga, commanded the post at Louisville, KY, and on was the Carolinas campaign.
After the War
He was US minister to Holland, a lawyer, and an author.
