Before Sharpsburg

A 27 year old clerk in Russell County, he was commissioned Captain, Company K, 48th Virginia Infantry on 25 June 1861. He was reelected Captain on 21 April 1862. He submitted his resigned for illness - "chronic inflammation of the lungs" - on 10 July 1862, and it was accepted on 15 July.

On the Campaign

He's listed in Orders of Battle as commanding the Regiment at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862, but that seems unlikely given his resignation in July 1862. He may have been confused with his cousin William R. Candler, First Lieutenant, Company K, who was killed in action at Sharpsburg.

After the War

He was a merchant in Hansonville, VA, and died there of pneumonia in 1905.
