Basil Charles Manly

The son of former North Carolina Governor (1848-50) J. Charles Manly, in 1860 he was a 21 year old lawyer living with his parents and siblings in Raleigh, NC. On 16 April 1861 he enrolled as First Lieutenant of Company A of the 10th North Carolina State Troops (First Artillery) in Raleigh, and was promoted to Captain the same day. He led his battery at Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Cold Harbor, Savage Station, and Malvern Hill, VA.

His battery, attached to General Semmes' Brigade, of General McLaws' Division, served in the defense of the South Mountain position at Crampton's Gap on 14 September 1862.

The brigade was sent to support General Stuart's cavalry at the leftmost part of the Confederate line on 17 September at Sharpsburg - it is not clear specifically what role the battery played in the battle.

He was at Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and the Wilderness, VA with his battery and was appointed Major of Artillery in November 1864. He was with General Joseph Johnston at his surrender near Durham Station, NC in April 1865.

In 1870 he was a successful farmer at Forrestville in Wake County, NC. He was elected Mayor of Raleigh in 1875 and reelected to 6 consecutive 1-year terms. He died during in office on 15 May 1882.

He married Lucy Haywood Bryan (1831-1930) in November 1866 and they had 2 sons.
