Before Antietam

A farmer in Winchester, he enlisted as Corporal in Company G, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry at age 25 on 9 January 1862. Promoted Sergeant on 12 February 1862. Wounded in the leg on 9 August 1862 at Cedar Mountain, VA.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the arm and side in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

Returned to duty in July 1863. Promoted First Sergeant 10 April 1863 and Sergeant Major of the Regiment on 17 July 1863. He was wounded in the arm and side at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863. He reenlisted on 31 December 1863. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, 54th Massachusetts on 9 June 1864, but declined the position. He was commissioned 1st Lieutenant, Company G, to date from 24 May 1864. He mustered out 14 July 1865.

After the War

Honored by brevet to Captain on 13 March 1865 for service in the campaign in Georgia and the Carolinas. He returned to farming to at least 1874.
