Confederate (CSV)

Private

Joseph B. Frame

Home State: Alabama

Branch of Service: Infantry

Unit: 4th Alabama Infantry

Before Sharpsburg

He was an unmarried farmer from Huntsville, AL when he enlisted as Private on 25 April 1861 in Company I, 4th Alabama Infantry. He was present at most engagements from First to Second Manassas, VA.

On the Campaign

Present in action on South Mountain and at Sharpsburg, though he may not have been an exemplary soldier there on 17 September:

Immediately after leaving the [Dunker] Church Joe Frame fell out of line. Lieutenant Jim Stewart, who was keeping a close eye on him, with his pistol in one hand, caught Joe by the collar and tried to force him forward, but Joe, falling down on his hands and knees, held his position against the struggles of his Lieutenant. Finding that the regiment was rapidly leaving him behind, Stewart gave Joe a vigorous kick and turned to overtake the fast disappearing regiment, while Joe made Gilpin speed back in the direction of Dunker Church.

The rest of the War

In action from Fredericksburg, VA in December 1862 through Chickamauga and Chattanooga in 1863. He was captured in action, place not given, in October 1863. Reported still a prisoner as late as January 1865.
