Confederate (CSV)

Lieutenant

James H. Stewart

Home State: Alabama

Branch of Service: Infantry

Unit: 4th Alabama Infantry

Before Sharpsburg

He was an unmarried merchant from Summit, AL when he enlisted as Private on 26 April 1861 in Company I, 4th Alabama Infantry. He was in action from First to Second Manassas, VA, and was elected 3rd Lieutenant on 20 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company on South Mountain and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862, where he had trouble with one of his men:

Immediately after leaving the [Dunker] Church Joe Frame fell out of line. Lieutenant Jim Stewart, who was keeping a close eye on him, with his pistol in one hand, caught Joe by the collar and tried to force him forward, but Joe, falling down on his hands and knees, held his position against the struggles of his Lieutenant. Finding that the regiment was rapidly leaving him behind, Stewart gave Joe a vigorous kick and turned to overtake the fast disappearing regiment, while Joe made Gilpin speed back in the direction of Dunker Church.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to First Lieutenant in November 1862. He was in action from Fredericksburg, VA in December 1862 through to the Knoxville. TN campaign of 1863. He was wounded in action at Knoxville Heights, TN, date not given.
