David Beverly III

In 1860 he was a 26 year old farmer at Brocketts Bridge in Herkimer County, NY. He enlisted there on 26 October 1861 and mustered as 5th Sergeant of Company D, 97th New York Infantry on 6 November.

He was wounded in the left leg in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

He was treated at the Smoketown Hospital near Sharpsburg, MD, and his leg was amputated. He was discharged for disability at Smoketown on 6 or 8 December 1862 and began receiving a disabled veteran's pension in January 1863.

By 1865 he was a mechanic at German Flatts, NY but was unemployed there in 1870. In 1880 he was a gunsmith at the Remington Gun Works in Ilion, NY. In 1900 he was living alone, boarding with the widow Mary Morey and her family in Ulysses, Tompkins County, NY - a "disabled soldier" with "no occupation."

He married Mary Martha Walrath (1836-1900) in October 1856 and they had 4 children.

His older brother John was also at Antietam, then Major of the 34th New York Infantry.
