Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 21 year old day laborer living with John A Lowder and family on their small farm at Albemarle in Stanly County, NC. He enlisted there on on 5 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company H, 4th North Carolina Infantry. They were re-designated the 14th Infantry on 14 November 1861.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

His memorial is on Findagrave; he may be buried as an "unknown" in Washington Confederate Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD, but is not listed among the names of those known to have been buried there.
His brother Tilmon was also killed at Sharpsburg.
