Age 20, he enlisted in Albemarle, NC on 28 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company H of the 14th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and died on the field on or before 19 September.

His service from his Compiled Service Records,1 online from fold3; he was left on the field with no record of capture by Federal troops. Personal details from family genealogists and the US Census of 1850, also as Tillman Sides. His memorial is on Findagrave; he may be buried as an "unknown" in Washington Confederate Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD, but is not listed among the names of those known to have been buried there.

His brother Edmund was also killed at Sharpsburg.
