Before Sharpsburg

He came to America in about 1850 with his family and in 1860 was an 18 year old living with his parents and 3 siblings on their farm at Mount Yonah in White County, GA. He enlisted in Habersham County, GA on 24 August 1861 and mustered as 3rd Sergeant of Company K, 24th Georgia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

He was one of 4 brothers, 3 of whom served in Company K. Their uncle (mother's brother) was Robert McMillan, first Colonel of the regiment. The Colonel's son Robert E McMillan, Samuel's cousin, was Major of the 24th Georgia and commanded it at Sharpsburg.
