He enlisted as Private, Company C, Phillips' Legion Infantry Battalion on 1 March 1862.

On the Campaign

He was left behind to care for a mortally wounded comrade, William Dobbins, and was captured with him at Fox's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was exchanged on 6 October 1862 and returned to duty, but he died of typhoid at Chimborazo Hospital #2 in Richmond, VA on 14 May 1863.
