A farmer in Spartanburg, he enlisted as Private, Company K, 5th South Carolina Infantry on 14 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

His brothers James Columbus Moss (1836-1906) and George Washington Moss were also in the Company. James survived the war, but George was also killed at Sharpsburg.

He married Francis Elizabeth Chapman (1837-?) in 1858.
