He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

His brothers James Columbus Moss (1836-1906) and George Washington Moss were also in the Company. James survived the war, but George was also killed at Sharpsburg.
He married Francis Elizabeth Chapman (1837-?) in 1858.
