Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a married 25 year old mechanic in Rockford, Coosa County, AL. He enlisted there on 27 March 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company H, 13th Alabama Infantry. He was appointed First Sergeant on 14 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in Maryland and in action with them on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Falling Waters near Williamsport, MD on 14 July 1863 and a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD by 9 August. He took a loyalty oath to the US there and was released on 14 March 1864. He claimed to have escaped from prison and returned to duty with his company on 7 August 1864, and was with them to at least December 1864, the latest military record.

He married Martha A Powell (1839-) in January 1859. He married again, Quintilla Josephine Curtis (1844-1924) in 1869, and they had 2 or 3 children.

His brothers Moses and William were also in Company H and at Sharpsburg.
