Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 21 year old teacher living with his parents on their farm at Rockford in Coosa County, AL. He enlisted at Montgomery, AL on 19 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company C of the 13th Alabama Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and was wounded at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again, with concussion, at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863, and was listed as a deserter from the hospital on 11 August. He was discharged for disability from his Gettysburg wound on 20 March 1864.

After the War

In 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a farmer in Coosa County, AL. By 1900 he had been ordained and was a Baptist Minister at Marble Valley, AL. In 1910 he was retired at Fayetteville in Talladega County, AL. He was killed the next year when he returned to his burning home to retrieve some business papers of his son's, and was crushed when the roof fell on him.

He married Mary Rebecca Looney (1841-1902) in December 1864 and they had 9 children.

His (probable) brothers Elbert and Robert were also in Company C and at Sharpsburg.
