Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 14 year old living with his father, stepmother, brother William, and paternal grandmother Ann on their small farm near Charlotte in Mecklenburg County, NC. He enlisted at Ranalesburg, NC on 17 May 1862, not yet 16 years old, and mustered as a Private in Company B of the 13th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond on 18 October and furloughed for 30 days on 29 October 1862. He was afterward with his company until he was captured at Petersburg, VA on 25 March 1865, then a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD. He took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released on 15 May 1865.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1910 he was a farmer at Berryhill near Charlotte in Mecklenburg County, NC.
