Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 17 year old living with his father, stepmother, brother James, and paternal grandmother Ann on their small farm near Charlotte in Mecklenburg County, NC. He enlisted at Ranalesburg, NC on 17 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 31 August. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was back on duty about January 1863 and may have been wounded again at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May (no details in his CSRs). He was reported missing at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863, and not afterward heard from. Presumed killed in battle.
