Before Sharpsburg
A 38 year old 'hireling' from Ruffin in Rockingham County, NC, he enlisted in Lawsonville, NC on 30 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company K of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 3 June in Suffolk, VA. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded by a gunshot to his left leg in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and his foot and lower third of his leg were amputated on the field by Surgeon "McCadden" [John H. McAden].
The rest of the War
His foot was amputated and he was initially treated at a hospital in Shepherdstown, MD. He was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital #1 in Richmond, VA on 21 October and was furloughed home on 26 November 1862. He never returned to his company, applied for an artificial limb in April 1864, and was formally retired to the Invalid Corps for disability on 10 May 1864. He was again in a hospital, in Charlottesville, VA in September 1864, probably for a routine re-examination.
