Before Sharpsburg
He was a doctor's son, but was orphaned at age 5 and raised by his mother's Yancey relatives. In 1860 he was a 23 year old physician living with his brother Bartlett, a "gentleman," at Yanceyville in Caswell County, NC. He owned 6 slaves. He enlisted as a Private on 18 May 1861 but was appointed Assistant Surgeon of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry by Governor Ellis on 28 May. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November and he was promoted to Surgeon on 16 (or 21) November 1861.
On the Campaign
He was with his regiment on the Campaign and treated wounded soldiers on or near the battlefield of Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was left behind at Gettysburg, PA after the July 1863 battle to treat the wounded and captured there. He was sent from Fort McHaney in Baltimore to at Fort Delaware on 20 July, and was back with his regiment by November 1863. He was appointed Brigade Surgeon, Scales' Brigade in November 1864 and was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
After the War
By 1870 he was a druggist living with brother Rufus, a banker, and family in Charlotte, NC. He invested in banks and inherited a cotton mill, and was active as President of the Merchants and Farmers' National Bank in Charlotte up to his death.
