Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 20 year old living with his parents, 7 younger siblings, and 2 slaves on their farm near Madison, Morgan County, GA. Going by Jeptha, he enlisted there on 24 February 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company G of the Infantry Battalion, Cobb's Legion.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the shoulder and captured in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was treated at the US 6th Army Corps field hospital in Burkittsville, MD then sent to the hospital at Fort McHenry in Baltimore on 9 October. He was transferred to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange on 11 October, was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 15 October, and was furloughed home on 5 November 1862. He returned to duty on 3 October 1863 but was again on furlough in March and April 1864. He was captured again, at Sailor's Creek, VA, on 6 April 1865. He took an oath of allegiance to the United States at Newport News, VA on 25 June and was released.

He married Martha Adelaide “Mattie” Thomas (1853-1889) and they had at least 3 children. He married again, Susan A. “Sue” Burruss (1847-1925) in 1893.
His sister Jane married another soldier of Company G of the Legion - John R Lewis - after the war.
