Robert Turner

In 1860 he was a 26 year old school teacher living with his parents and 7 siblings on their farm at Bengal in Bulloch County, GA. He enlisted at Orlando, FL on 17 May 1862 and mustered there the same day as First Sergeant of Company G, 8th Florida Infantry.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange, arriving there on the 6th. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 9 October, furloughed home for 20 days on 19 October, and was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.

He sprained his ankle and was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863, transferred from the College Hospital in Gettysburg to Fort McHenry in Baltimore on 19 July, and sent on to Fort Delaware on 30 July 1863. He took an oath of allegiance to the United States there and was released on 10 June 1865.

By 1870 he was farming his own place in Bulloch County, GA. He moved to Coffee County, GA in 1879 and was a farmer there, but by 1900 was a day laborer. He applied for a confederate pension in Coffee County in May 1904 on the basis of age and poverty.

He married Carolyn Miller (1845-1905) in January 1866 in Sumter County, FL and they had 8 children by 1890.
