Before Sharpsburg
A 24 year old merchant in Rockingham County, he was commissioned First Lieutenant, Company G, 14th North Carolina Infantry on 10 May 1861 in Rockingham County. He was promoted to Captain on 25 April 1862.
On the Campaign
Griffith led the 14th NC at Sharpsburg as the senior officer after Col Bennett took over the Brigade and LCol Johnston was wounded.
The rest of the War
He was wounded and captured at Cedar Creek, VA on 19 October 1864 and hospitalized in Richmond to at least February 1865. He was listed as absent, wounded, on 21 March 1865.
After the War
He died relatively young at about 37 years of age in 1873.
