Before Sharpsburg

He had service, probably a a Private, in the 2nd Virginia Infantry, and was commissioned Captain in the 27th Virginia Infantry, date not known.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment as senior officer present in Maryland.

After the War

Following the war he taught for one year at Washington College, and then studied medicine at the University of Virginia. After receiving his medical degree, he practiced in New York City and later in Louisville, Kentucky. He was a Professor at the College of Medicine in Louisville from 1874-1904.
