Unit history

Companies A, B, and H, were recruited in Berks county, and the remaining companies in Philadelphia. The unit's first serious combat was at 2nd Bull Run (30 Aug 1862). At that battle .. "Colonel M'Lean being absent, sick, the command devolved upon Lieutenant Colonel Joseph A. M'Lean, who shortly after the action opened was mortally wounded, the command devolving on Major Gile."

On the Antietam Campaign

At the start of the Maryland Campaign, the regiment was detailed as guard to a wagon-train at Frederick, MD. They were not directly involved at South Mountain, though nearby.

On the 17th they advanced with their brigade as part of the Federal First Corps advance down the Hagerstown Pike, and were heavily engaged.
