On the Sharpsburg Campaign

The Battalion was initially led at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 by Captain Cary F. Grimes; Major John S. Saunders then absent on sick leave. Major Saunders returned to duty during the day and took command of the Battalion after Captain Grimes was mortally wounded in action there.
