Unit history

Organized in April 1861 in Raleigh as the Ellis Light or Ellis Flying Artillery. They mustered into Confederate service on 8 May 1861; officially designated as Company A, 10th Regiment, NC State Troops (1st Regiment NC Artillery). First Captain was Stephen Dodson Ramseur who was relieved by Basil Charles Manly in April 1862.
