Unit history
The 1st Rockbridge Artillery was organized in Rockbridge County, Virginia, on April 12, 1861. Mustered into state service at Staunton, Rockbridge County, on April 29, 1861. Mustered into Confederate service on May 11, 1861. The battery was attached to the 1st Virginia Artillery Regiment and later to the 1st Virginia Artillery battalion.
The first commander of the Battery was Captain John A. McCausland. Later commanders were Captains William M. Pendleton, William McLaughlin, William T. Poague, and Archibald Graham
