Unit history
Also known as the Madison "Tips" (Tipperarys), this was a unit mostly made up of Irishmen. They were originally organized at New Carthage, LA as an infantry Company and mustered into Confederate service at Leesburg, VA in May 1861. The were converted to artillery on 23 August 1861 and completed their organization in Richmond in October 1861.
