Before Sharpsburg
From Iredell County, he enlisted as Private, Company C, 48th North Carolina Infantry, date not known.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
After the War
In 1870 he was a farmer in Chambersburg Township, Iredell County, NC but he died of infection from his old Sharpsburg wound on 15 September that year, just 30 years old, and less than a month after his 19 year old wife had died.

He married Martha Marie McNeely (1850-1870) in December 1869 and they had a daughter Mattie L. Arey. Martha died shortly after Mattie was born in August 1870, and Mattie only lived about 9 months - dying in May 1871.
His brothers Charles and Theophilus were also in Company C and also wounded at Sharpsburg.
