Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was an unmarried 19 year old farm hand living on William Buchanan's place at Lamar/Rockdale, Randolph County, AL. He enlisted in Eastville, AL on 12 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company E of the 13th Alabama Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was in action with his company at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863 and exchanged to return to duty in September 1863. He was wounded at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 6 May 1864 and on furlough to about the end of the year with no later military record.
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1900 he was a farmer at Carter's Store/Lamar in Randolph County, AL.

He married Martha E. Buchannon (1840-1896) and they had 8 children between 1867 and 1885. He married again, Amarintha "Sissy" Blackstone (later Hawkins, 1855-1927) in 1896 and they had a daughter Ruth (1899-1919).
His brothers James, John, and Kindred (1832-1880; not at Sharpsburg) were also in Company E. James and John were also captured at Gettysburg but both died in captivity at Fort Delaware.
