Before Sharpsburg
A married 30 year old farmer, he enlisted in Eastville, AL on 12 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company E of the 13th Alabama Infantry. He was appointed 2nd Corporal on 1 September 1862.
On the Campaign
He was in action with his company at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863 and sent to the prison at Fort Delaware. He died there of disease on 17 October 1863.

His brothers Isaac, John, and Kindred (1832-1880; not at Sharpsburg) were also in Company E. Isaac and John were also captured at Gettysburg, and John, like James, died in captivity at Fort Delaware.
