Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an unmarried 18 year old farmer living with his parents and 8 siblings at Rockdale/Lamar in Randolph County, AL. He enlisted in Eastville, AL on 12 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company E of the 13th Alabama Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was in action with his company at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863 and sent to the prison at Fort Delaware. He died there of disease on 10 April 1865.

His brothers Isaac, James, and Kindred (1832-1880; not at Sharpsburg) were also in Company E. Isaac and James were also captured at Gettysburg, and James, like John died in captivity at Fort Delaware.
