Unit history
The 76th was first in significant combat during General Pope's campaign in Northern Virginia in August 1862, with nearly 150 casualties in that action.
On the Antietam Campaign
The Regiment and the rest of the Brigade were in action on South Mountain on 14 September, but held in reserve north of the Poffenberger farm on the 17th to protect Hooker's 1st Corps artillery.

After the Antietam Campaign
The 76th served through the end of 1864 with the Army of the Potomac, seeing action at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spottsylvania Courthouse, and the siege of Petersburg. The Regiment was musted out over the last part of 1864 by companies:
"Companies B, F and K were honorably discharged and mustered out July 1, 1864; Company A October 11; G October 20; C November 8; E November 18; I December 1, 1864; H January 1, 1865; detachments of these companies and Company D remaining in the field were, under Capt. Albert J. Jarvis, transferred to the 147th N. Y. Volunteers January 28 and 31, 1865."1
