Unit history

The Regiment was organized at Albany in early May 1861 in response to the first call for troops at the outbreak of War. They were mustered into Federal service for two years on 22 May.1

On the Antietam Campaign

By 4 September 1862, at the start of the Maryland Campaign, the Regiment had been decimated by casualties and disease. As a result, they were consolidated into 4 companies, commanded by Captains Fitzgerald, Fenn, Waller and Judd. Captain Mapes, recently returned from recruiting duty in New York was senior officer present and commanded the unit.

The Regiment saw no action at South Mountain on September 14th, and was only briefly under fire on the Federal right at Antietam on the 17th.1
