Unit history
They became known as the "Jackass Battery" from their late-1861 combat experience in (West) Virginia equipped with mountain howitzers drawn by "raw, unbroken mules".
On the Antietam Campaign
At South Mountain on September 14th, "Lieutenant Crome, commanding a section of McMullins battery, was killed whilst serving a piece in place of the gunner, who had been disabled."
