On the Antietam Campaign
The regiment served in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia into July 1862 and was then posted to Winchester, VA. They evacuated Winchester with the rest of General White's command on 2 September and and joined the garrison at Harpers Ferry. They were part of the defense and saw action on Maryland Heights 11-13 September and on Bolivar Heights on 14 and 15 September. They were captured at the surrender of Harpers Ferry on 15 September.
After the Antietam Campaign
They were paroled on 16 September and marched to Annapolis, MD, arriving on 21 September. They were then ordered to Chicago. Traveling by steamer to Baltimore and then by rail, they arrived at Camp Douglas on the 28th. Most of the troops deserted the camp but returned to duty when the regiment was exchanged in mid-January 1863 and reorganized at Cleveland.
