Unit history
Recruited mostly in Cincinnati/Hamilton County, they were organized at Camp Dennison by Colonel Augustus Moor, the 28th Ohio Infantry was also known as the 2nd German Ohio Regiment. The unit operated in West Virginia and fought at Carnifex Ferry and other action nearby. They were transferred to the Army of the Potomac with the Kanawha Division for action at South Mountain and Antietam. Returning to West Virginia they participated at Lewisburg and other actions. The 28th then moved to the Army of the Shenandoah and was on the 1864 Shenandoah campaign fighting at New Market and Piedmont.
