On the Antietam Campaign

Lieutenant Colonel Pinto was temporarily assigned to command the 31st New York Infantry on 13 September 1862 and led them on South Mountain and up to the morning of the 17th. Colonel Matheson and Major Lemon were both mortally wounded at Crampton's Gap on September 14th and General Newton ordered Pinto back to the 32nd New York to take command on 17 September.1
