Unit history
6 Companies - A to F - were formed at Madison in August 1861, originally intended for the First Indiana Cavalry regiment. They were designated the 3rd Cavalry and assigned to the Army of the Potomac on 22 October 1861. These Companies were known as the East or Right Wing or Battalion of the Regiment, and it was they who were on the Maryland Campaign of 1862.
Companies G, H, I, and K were formed between October and December 1861 and were assigned to the Army of the Ohio in the Western Theater. Companies L (est. October 1862) and M (December 1862) were added later. These 6 Companies were the West (or Left) Wing of the regiment. The were eventually transferred to the 8th Indiana Cavalry.
