Unit history
The unit was organized under Colonel Wofford in April 1861at Camp Brown, Cobb County, Georgia, and entered Confederate States service in August of that year. They were assigned to Hood's Texas Brigade, and served in that unit until after Sharpsburg, when they were transferred to Cobb's Brigade. They were at Seven Pines, Seven Days Battles, Gaines' Mill, and 2nd Manassas before embarking on the Maryland Campaign.
On the Sharpsburg Campaign
The Regiment was lightly engaged at Boonsboro (Crampton's Gap) on 15 September, and heavily in Hood's counterattack into the Cornfield on the northern part of the field at Sharpsburg on the 17th. Most of the unit's casualties were taken in repeated assaults of the guns of the Federal Battery B, 4th US, posted near the Hagerstown Pike in the Cornfield.

After the Sharpsburg Campaign
The 18th continued in active service with the Army of Northern Virginia and was engaged at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, and Cold Harbor. Their last battle was at Sayler's Creek, Virginia, on April 6, 1865. The remaining veterans surrendered with General Lee at Appomattox.
