"This regiment, Col. Baron Fred. W. Von Egloffstein, was organized in New York city March 1, 1862, by the consolidation of the 3d Regiment German Rifles, Col. Casper Schneider, with the Seward Infantry, Colonel von Egloffstein. It was mustered in the service of the United States between November, 1861, and March, 1862, for three years."

On the Antietam Campaign
They were a leading element of the Federal 9th Corps assault toward Sharpsburg during the afternoon of 17 September. Late on that day, their battle flag was captured by members of the 17th VA Regiment.
