On the Antietam Campaign
"Pausing at Washington long enough to exchange the worthless Austrian rifles with which it had been armed, for the smooth-bore Springfield muskets, the regiment pushed forward through Maryland, over the battle-ground of South Mountain, and was greeted, as it approached Antietam, with the sound of the conflict. The Fifth Corps was held in reserve during the engagement, and hence the regiment was not called into action."2
